Shaq Surprises Florida Basketball Cop and the Kids He Didn’t Arrest for Being Kids
People are quick to call police officers heroes when they save someone’s life or make a daring arrest. And that makes sense, because those things are pretty heroic. However, they aren’t the only ways police officers can be heroes. Sometimes they can be heroes simply by teaching kids that they don’t have to be afraid of cops because not all cops are a**holes.
That’s what a cop in Gainsville, Florida, did earlier this month when responding to a noise complaint about a group of kids playing basketball in broad daylight. Instead of telling them to shut up and be quiet, he started playing basketball with them, possibly influencing their opinions of the police forever.
Thankfully, after video of the incident went viral last week, that cop—Officer Bobby White—is now being recognized as the hero he is…by Shaquille O’Neal.
On Saturday, Shaq travelled to Gainsville to shake Officer White’s hand and thank him for being so cool. Then he and Officer White went back to the scene of the non-crime so Shaq could meet the kids Officer White didn’t needlessly harass…and play some hoops, of course.
Here are some photos from the feel-good meeting:

Well done, Mr. Shaq. Well done.
