Kimbo Slice Headlines Bellator 158, Despite Fact That His Last Fight Was Complete Garbage
Back in February, at Bellator 149, Kimbo Slice took part in what many observers called the worst professional MMA fight of all time, “defeating” Dada 5000 with a series of punches that looked like they were delivered in slow-motion. Then in March we learned that Slice failed his drug test prior to that fight, leaving us all to wonder how much worse it would have been had he not been taking PEDs.
Given that recent history, you might think Bellator would part ways with Slice. But apparently any publicity is good publicity for a second-rate MMA promotion. So it turns out they’re doubling down.
On Sunday, Bellator president Scott Coker went on SportsCenter and announced that Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson will headline Bellator 158 at London’s O2 Arena on July 16.
This will be the second meeting between Slice and Thompson. They first squared off in the now-defunct EliteXC back in 2008 in what was just Slice’s third professional fight. Slice won that fight after one of his punches popped Thompson’s cauliflower ear, causing an explosion of blood.
Of course, Slice is facing a one-year suspension in Texas following the positive drug test before Bellator 149, which will prevent him from fighting anywhere in the U.S. for some time. But that suspension doesn’t extend to the U.K., hence the fight in London.
The fight will air on Spike. Set your DVRs now. It should be God-awful.
