NL Batting Champ Dee Gordon Suspended from MLB for 80 Games after PED Violation
Big news coming out of Miami this morning as last year’s NL batting champ, Dee Gordon, will be sitting out for 80 games effective immediately after a reported violation of the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. The second baseman reportedly tested positive for testosterone and clostebol. Strangely, it’s being reported that the positive test came during spring training.
Dee Gordon claims he didn’t know he was taking them, but is accepting the suspension without contest. He had the following to say:
“Though I did not do so knowingly, I have been informed that test results showed I ingested something that contained prohibited substances. The hardest part about this is feeling that I have let down my teammates, the organization and the fans. I have been careful to avoid products that could contain something banned by MLB and the 20+ tests that I have taken and passed throughout my career prove this. I made a mistake and I accept the consequences.”
Gordon had initially fought the positive test but now seems inclined to serve his sentence. In addition to the suspension, he’s also ineligible for the postseason.
All in all, the penalty will cost him about $1.65 million in salary. The issue surfaced in the first year of disgraced slugger Barry Bonds’ tenure as hitting coach for the team.
