NASCAR driving is difficult and dangerous under the best conditions. But things became way scarier for Dale Earnhardt Jr. during yesterday’s GEICO 500 race in Talladega. He was driving around in a circle, as NASCAR drivers so often do, when his steering wheel popped off, as they almost never do.
Fortunately, he had the presence of mind to grab the stem to which the steering wheel plugs in and make some adjustments before quickly sliding the wheel back on and continuing with the race. But it was a scary few seconds. Take a look:
Unfortunately, Earnhardt Jr. was unable to finish the race, finishing in 40th position.
