Pirates Pitcher Ryan Vogelsong in Hospital After Taking 91-MPH Fastball to the Face (Video)
Scary scene in Pittsburgh on Monday afternoon as Pirates pitcher Ryan Vogelsong took a pitch to the face and fell to the dirt like a sack of potatoes.
Vogelsong was batting with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the second against Colorado Rockies pitcher Jordan Lyles. With the count 0-2, Vogelsong was apparently looking for a pitch away, but Lyles surprised him with a 91-mph fastball up and in, and Vogelsong was unable to get out of the way.
You can tell from the audio that the ball hit Vogelsong’s helmet, but you cannot tell whether it hit the helmet before or after it his Vogelsong’s face.
Take a look:
After being carted off the field, Vogelsong was transported to Allegheny General Hospital. However, so far all Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk would say is that he’s being treated for an injury “to the eye itself, which includes the orbital [bone].”
Vogelsong will certainly be heading to the DL here, but that’s not the Pirates’ main concern. Careers have been ended by eye injuries like this. Right now you just hope Vogelsong isn’t in that boat.
