Craig Sager to Receive Jimmy V Perseverance Award at ESPYS
Prior to last night’s Game 4 battle between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Golden State Warriors (which OKC won, 118-94, to take a 3-1 series lead), it was announced by the TNT crew that one of their own, sideline reporter Craig Sager, will be receiving the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at this year’s ESPYS.
Sager was diagnosed with leukemia back in 2014, forcing him to miss 11 months of action. He has since returned to the sidelines in an effort to continue doing what he loves most, however, back in April during an interview with HBO he revealed that his cancer was no longer in remission.
When speaking with TNT prior to last night’s game, Sager spoke about the honor of receiving the Jimmy V Award and the impact Jim Valvano‘s ESPYS speech from 1993 has had on him:
“That speech he made on March 3 of 1993 resonates as strong today as it did that day. I have it on my cellphone. I can play it at the hospital when I’m feeling down. ‘Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.’ That’s pretty much what I’ve tried to follow. Don’t give up and don’t give in.”
This year’s ESPYS are scheduled to air live on ABC on July 13.
