Mychal Thompson Believes Warriors Better Than Showtime Lakers: ‘I Think They Would Beat Us’
Mychal Thompson, father of Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson, had an interesting take on the Current Warriors squad and his showtime Los Angeles Lakers.
Here’s what he had to say while co-hosting his ESPN LA radio show:
“They make eight 3’s a quarter. Golden State would outscore us 50-15 on 3’s. So how are we supposed to win? So I agree with Klay. I think they would beat us. We couldn’t keep up with them offensively because of the way they could score so quickly.”
“I am a man secure in my legacy, secure in my accomplishments. I don’t have to be, ‘Oh, we are better than them.’ I’m not that grumpy old man even though I sound like that many a time. But I can admit with someone who I think the new era is better than something else or has changed from the time I played. And the way they play, we would have a hard time keeping up because like I said, our game wasn’t shooting 3’s, which theirs are. And three beats two.”
“I’d move my feet very well for a big man — as a compliment myself — but when I think about switching out on Steph Curry, I break out in hives,” Mychal said, laughing. “I grew up on an island (the Bahamas). Talk about being isolated on an island out there stuck out with him as he goes through his little dance. I would hate to be out there.”
At that point listeners started calling in stating he was giving the Warriors too much credit and he was losing his mind.
“Why do they doubt me?” Mychal said. “I was there, man. This team is for real. See, there you go. Once again, people out there not giving the Warriors full credit. It’s weird. I think it’s because the Warriors, they all look too quiet or boyish or something. Maybe that’s why people don’t think that this team is for real. They all look like they’re choir boys. Steph, Klay with no tattoos, they don’t scowl. Harrison Barnes looks like he should be taking political science courses as opposed to being one of the best young players in the game.”
“Magic and Kareem, they’ll probably disagree with me,” he said.
Yes indeed. Magic Johnson does disagree with him as he stated via Twitter:
I disagree with Mychal Thompson and his son Klay, my “Showtime” Lakers would beat the Warriors.
