Ben Simmons Cousin Killed in Hit-and-Run

2016 NBA Draft

Zachary Simmons, the 21-year-old cousin of Philadelphia 76ers #1 overall draft pick Ben Simmons, was struck and killed by a black SUV in a hit-and-run around 3:30 a.m. ET on Saturday in Hoboken, New Jersey, according to CBS New York.

“The impact was so great witnesses reported hearing two loud thuds.

The victim’s grieving mother, Monique Steele, told CBS2’s Steve Langford that police told her the car was going at least 70 miles an hour.

“To be speeding enough to kill my child is beyond me,” Steele said.

The young victim was out for a friend’s birthday Friday evening, after celebrating his cousin Ben Simmons’ selection this week by the Philadelphia 76ers, his mother said.

“He had just went to the NBA draft for his first cousin — number one draft pick” Steele said.

Ben Simmons wrote on Twitter, “I’m glad I could share this moment in my life with you. Rest in peace Cuzzo.”

Thoughts and prayers to the Simmons family.
