Cards Pitcher Adam Wainwright Almost Randy Johnson’d a Bird Last Night (Video)

adam wainwright almost hits bird with pitch

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright almost Randy Johnson‘d a bird on Monday night.

For those of you who have no idea what the hell that means, please, allow me to explain. You see, on March 24, 2001, during a spring training game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants, Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson obliterated a bird with a fastball. The thing swooped down right in front of the catcher just as Johnson was releasing a pitch. Then it exploded into a cloud of feathers like you’d expect to see in a cartoon.

Take a look:

The chances of that ever happening at all are miniscule. The chances of it ever happening again are infinitesimal. But we came pretty damn close in KC last night. On a 3-2 pitch to Royals third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert, Adam Wainwright came just inches away from vaporizing a bird.

Take a look:

Of course, if Wainwright actually had hit the bird it would have been pretty ironic. You know, because he plays for the Cardinals.
