Aaron Rodgers Says 49ers Drafted Alex Smith Over Him Because Smith’s a Nicer Guy
Aaron Rodgers recently spoke with the press about what still seems to be a sore subject: the 49ers taking Alex Smith over him with the #1 pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.
Rodgers said that the reason 49ers head coach Mike Nolan went for Alex Smith was because the prospect held the car door open for his mom when he was arriving for lunch with the team. Says Rodgers, “The story that I heard, and I don’t know if it’s true or not, was that Mike Nolan said that when he saw Alex open the car door for his mom, he knew that was the quarterback he wanted.”
He continues, “I was at lunch with [the 49ers]. My mom wasn’t there. My dad wasn’t there.”
Nolan has openly stated that there was no real football reason for picking Smith over Rodgers, who was a hometown favorite after attending Cal.
Sounds like picking the guy with the (seemingly) better character doesn’t ALWAYS pay off.
