Jordan Brand Presents The Fabulous 23 Dinner

On Monday, Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan did something he rarely did in the past, and that was speak out on social issues—especially African American issues.  And it did not go unnoticed.

“I can no longer stay silent,” Jordan wrote in a first-person piece published by ESPN’s

“I was raised by parents who taught me to love and respect people regardless of their race or background, so I am saddened and frustrated by the divisive rhetoric and racial tensions that seem to be getting worse as of late,” Jordan wrote. “I know this country is better than that, and I can no longer stay silent. We need to find solutions that ensure people of color receive fair and equal treatment AND that police officers – who put their lives on the line every day to protect us all – are respected and supported.”

Jordan donated $2M to the Internal Association of Chiefs of Police’s Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony has been very outspoken about social issues lately and wanted more athletes to use their platform to influence change in America. Melo was asked about the letter Michael Jordan sent out on Monday and this was his response:

“That’s big. That’s MJ. That’s Michael Jordan. As African-Americans, that’s who we look up to. He’s a great voice with a great platform. I’m just glad that he came out now and he used it at this time with everything going on.”
