Two years ago Rory McIlroy said he was going to play golf for Ireland at the 2016 Summer Olympics. However, that was before he was engaged to Erica Stoll, and before all the hysteria over birth defects caused by the Zika virus. When McIlroy announced he was pulling out of the Olympics due to concerns about Zika, it wasn’t a huge shock.

Of course, McIlroy’s concerns are pretty understandable. But that doesn’t mean his would-be Irish Olympic teammates weren’t going to give him some sh*t over pulling out.

Sure enough, during the opening ceremonies on Friday, Irish boxers Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan did just that.

First it was Conlan, who tagged McIlroy in a selfie with Rickie Fowler and claimed Fowler called McIlroy a p*ssy:

Then it was Barnes, who went for the jugular in a selfie with McIlroy’s ex-fiancée, Caroline Wozniacki:

Fortunately McIlroy (or whoever runs his Twitter account) is not a hothead, or this could have turned pretty ugly. Instead, he waited a few days to come up with the perfect response:

Paddy Barnes thought McIlroy’s response was pretty great. Though he apparently couldn’t resist throwing in one more jab with a #TeamZika hashtag:

Apparently Olympic boxers have a lot of free time on their hands.
