Hockey Player Loses a Chunk of His Ear After Being Hit in the Head by a Puck (Video)
Here’s a tip for all of you aspiring NHLers out there: don’t block slapshots with your head!
Washington Capitals defenseman Daniel Winnik just learned that lesson the hard way.
On Thursday night Winnik went down to block a shot by the Florida Panthers’ Reilly Smith late in the third period. However, instead of going down feet-first, with his head furthest from the most likely trajectory of the puck, Winnik went down head-first, putting his noggin in harm’s way. And unfortunately, the result was a glancing blow to the side of his head.
Take a look:
Winnik stayed down on the ice for a few minutes after that before being helped off to the locker room. Amazingly, he then returned to the Caps bench without even missing a shift. But according to Washington coach Barry Trotz, he was missing something else:
Barry Trotz said Daniel Winnik lost a little piece of his ear when the puck hit him in the head. Seriously.

Look hockey dudes, I know you’re tough and you always put the team first, and that’s great! But please, dial it down a notch. This is a little ridiculous.
