Russell Wilson on Cam Newton Complaining: ‘If I Didn’t Want To Get Hit, I’d Play Tennis’
Last year, Cam Newton was criticized for dancing too much after first downs and touchdowns. But they were winning, so Cam had zero complaints.
This year, the Carolina Panthers are 2-5 and look like a shell of last year’s Super Bowl squad. As for MVP QB Cam Newton, he is not happy and complaining about officials not protecting him when he gets hit.
Being 6-foot-5 and 245lbs, Cam is likely receiving the Shaq treatment, where officials see just how bigger he is than most players and don’t give him the calls like a Russell Wilson (5-foot-11 and 215lbs) would receive.
Wilson was asked recently if he agreed with Cam Newton—that referees treat him differently, because he’s bigger and runs out of the pocket a lot.
“No, I don’t feel that way,” Wilson said, according to ESPN’s Sheil Kapadia. “I just try to play smart football. I think I’ve said this before, but if I didn’t want to play football, if I didn’t want to get hit, I’d be playing tennis. That’s just one of those things, you know you’re going to get hit, and you know you’re going to take some tough hits every once in a while, and you have to hang in there.
“At the same time, it’s a rough game, and you always want to make a smart decision and get down, get out of bounds.”
“I haven’t seen his particular situation,” Wilson said. “Honestly, I try to stay away from watching ESPN and all that, but I know for me – trying to get down, slide, get out of bounds, all of that, because those guys are chasing after you.”
