Miami Heat to Retire Shaq’s Jersey Dec. 22 When Los Angeles Lakers Are in Town
Shaquille O’Neal only played 3 1/2 years with the Miami Heat, but he delivered a championship along with Dwyane Wade and that was enough for Heat president and former coach Pat Riley to retire his jersey.
Shaq’s #34 jersey was retired by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2013. On December 22nd of this year, Shaq will become the 12th player in NBA history to have his jersey retired by multiple franchises when the Heat give him the same honor.
Fittingly, it will be while the Lakers are in town to face the Miami Heat.
“I’ll say this, and I mean this,” Riley said, “Shaq’s acquisition was bigger than any acquisition that we ever made, including the Big Three.
“The seminal moment,” Riley says, “to really make us really, really legitimate. (O’Neal) turned our franchise around. He gave us real legitimacy.”
Shaq averaged 19.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks during the 205 games that he played for the Miami Heat.
