Jay-Z Throws Shade at Phil Jackson While Presenting LeBron James with SI Award (Video)

Sports Illustrated tabbed Jay-Z to present LeBron James with their Sportsperson of the Year Award on Monday night, and the rap mogul just could not pass up the opportunity to throw some shade at New York Knicks president Phil Jackson.

Jackson was widely criticized last month for referring to LeBron’s friends and business associates as his “posse” in an interview with ESPN.

“It’s the word ‘posse’ and the characterization I take offense to,” explained LeBron’s agent and childhood friend Maverick Carter. “If he would have said LeBron and his agent, LeBron and his business partners or LeBron and his friends, that’s one thing. Yet because you’re young and black, he can use that word. We’re grown men.”

Jackson had a chance to apologize for his choice of words last week on CBS Sports’ We Need to Talk. But he took a pass.

“The obvious thing is, the word itself carries connotation,” Jackson said. “And I just don’t understand that, that part of it—the word. So I guess word choice could be something I could regret. But talking about other teams’ players, that’s out of the box.”

Perhaps if Jackson had just manned up and apologized, Jay-Z might have worded his presentation speech differently on Monday night.

Instead, we got this subtle yet powerful jab:

A word of advice for Phil Jackson: whatever you do, don’t get into a war of words with Jay-Z. You may have 11 rings, but he is the king of New York.
