Lionel Messi Puts on Otherworldly Display in Barcelona’s 4-1 Win Over Espanyol (Videos)
Last week Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the 2016 Ballon d’Or by France Football. But don’t try telling the players on RCD Espanyol that Ronaldo is the best soccer player in the world. On Sunday they were absolutely humiliated by Lionel Messi, who turned in one of his all-time best performances in the Barcelona Derby.
While Messi only got credit for one goal in Barcelona’s 4-1 thrashing of Espanyol, he was actually responsible for three. The first two he set up with superhuman dribbles that sliced through the Espanyol defense like a hot knife through butter. And they came just a minute-and-a-half apart.
Take a look:
As if those weren’t enough, Messi put the final nail in Espanyol’s coffin 20 minutes later by nutmegging the goalie. Off a volley. With the outside of his left foot.
It was unreal:
There’s going to be a lot of debate in the coming month about whether Messi or Ronaldo should be the 2016 FIFA World Player of the Year.
You can be sure anyone making an argument for Messi is going to cite this game. And rightfully so.
