Western Michigan’s Crazy Lateral-Heavy Trick Play at the Cotton Bowl Netted Them Only Five Yards (Video)
Sure, trick plays are often risky due to the likelihood of a turnover or a big loss, but the idea is that the upside outweighs the risk. Well, that’s true in principle. But in yesterday’s Cotton Bowl, the Western Michigan Broncos went through a lot of effort and danger to net themselves a mere five yards on a very complex trick play.
By my count, it involved an initial handoff, a reverse handoff, a pitch, and a cross-field lateral.
Here it is. Feel free to do your own math on it:

It was fun to watch, but there was like a 50% chance of a fumble and a 90% chance of lost yardage, so it seems they may have wanted a bigger gain here.
