Here’s How They Pulled Off Crazy Opening to Lady Gaga Halftime Show (Video)
It was pretty obvious to anyone watching the Lady Gaga halftime show at Super Bowl LI that the singer did not really leap off the roof of Houston’s NRG Stadium. Or at least it should have been obvious when all those red, white, and blue stars took the shape of an American flag up in the night sky. That’s not exactly a natural phenomenon.
Still, the stunt looked pretty fantastic. So how did Gaga pull it off? Thanks to some video shot by people actually at the game, we now have the answer.
As it turns out, the opening segment with Gaga singing “America the Beautiful” and “This Land Is Your Land” on the roof was pre-recorded. The broadcast showed her leap off the roof, then cut to a shot of her being lowered down onto the stage. In reality Lady Gaga was dangling on a line, in the dark, in the middle of the stadium while the roof segment was played on the stadium jumbotron. Then, when the pre-recorded bit was over, they hit Lady Gaga with the spotlights and she was lowered the rest of the way.
Here’s what the opening looked like for viewers at home:
And here is what folks who were actually at the game saw:
Of course, while Lady Gaga may not have leapt from the top of the stadium, being suspended by a wire a hundred feet off the ground is still pretty badass. Hats off to her for putting on a damn good Super Bowl halftime show.
