Felony Sexual Assault Warrant Issued for Creighton Basketball Player Maurice Watson
Police in Omaha have issued a felony warrant charging Creighton point guard Maurice Watson with first degree sexual assault. They told the Omaha World-Herald on Thursday that Watson is not yet in custody.
According to the incident report, a 19-year-old woman claims Watson raped her in the bathroom of a midtown residence sometime around 3 a.m. on February 4. It’s unclear when the police began their investigation, but Creighton, a Jesuit, Catholic university, announced on Wednesday that Watson has been suspended from all team activities since February 13. The university also announced that they are conducting their own investigation and have been cooperating with authorities.
“There is no tolerance for sexual misconduct at Creighton, and all allegations will be investigated fairly and with dignity,” the school said in a statement. “As the process continues, we are extending care and concern for all involved.”
Watson is a senior who transferred from Boston University prior to his sophomore season. He was averaging 12.9 points per game until tearing the ACL in his left knee on January 16. He had surgery to repair his ACL on February 6.
Watson’s indefinite suspension means he will not be allowed to participate in the Blue Jays’ Senior Day festivities on February 26.
Hopefully Creighton will stay out in front of this and do right by the alleged victim. College sports are in desperate need of a moral leader these days.
