Matt Barnes is Fed Up With The Derek Fisher Chants by Fans: ‘I’m Sick of That Sh-t’
A few years ago, current Golden State Warriors forward Matt Barnes reportedly drove 95 miles to beat the crap out of former Los Angeles Lakers teammate Derek Fisher, when he was made aware that D-Fish was romancing his estranged wife.
It’s been almost two years since that incident, but fans refuse to let it go whenever Barnes travels to different arenas around the country, because he will always be remembered as the guy who drove ridiculously far to confront the then-New York Knicks coach over his ex-wife, Gloria Govan.
“Everywhere I go I’m still getting Derek Fisher chants,” the 6-foot-7 forward told Sporting News’ Nubyjas Wilborn. “I’m sick of that s—. I can hear that from the stands. But if I say anything to a fan, I’m catching a fine. So I do my best to tune it out.”
Barnes was playing for the Sacramento Kings at that time and received a two-game suspension for it. But what made it more memorable is when Kanye West forever immortalized the moment by referencing it in his song “30 Hours.”
“It’s tough,” the 37-year-old admitted. “I’m a target on and off the court. I’ve done some things I regret. But being a target is rough. Everything I do is major news. Everybody is looking for me to fail.”
Over 14 NBA seasons, Barnes has been on nine different squads and is still searching for that elusive NBA Championship. Getting released by the Sacramento Kings and picked up by the Warriors, he now has his best shot to get that ring.
“I am not going to mess up this chance,” he said. “There’s a lot of BS off the court. I deal with off the court (drama) that comes with the territory. It still hurts, but I also know that it’s part of the game.”
Barnes is averaging 5.8 points, 5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 20 minutes per outing in his second run with the Warriors.
