Marlins’ Dee Gordon Wears Custom Insoles in Memory of Jose Fernandez
Back in September, Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and his two friends, Emilio Macia and Eduardo Rivero, lost their lives in a tragic boating accident.
In the very first at-bat after his death, his friend and teammate Dee Gordon took a pitch right-handed to honor the late pitcher, then switched to a left-handed stance and proceeded to hit a home run to right field. It was an awesome moment.

As the Marlins get set to start a new year, Dee Gordon wanted to make sure Fernandez took the field with the team to open the 2017 season.
“Gordon took the field in Washington wearing a pair of custom-made insoles in memory of Fernandez. One insole displayed Gordon and Fernandez laughing together, while the other showed the late pitcher and his trademark smile looking down on the Marlins’ roster. Under Armour created the special gear and surprised Gordon with the insoles at Nationals Park.”
I truly appreciate @emays12 and @uabaseball for surprising me and making my customs this year truly special…I am truly blown away by these shoes and every pair I get to wear this year…thank you guys so much for this genuine act of kindness in helping me remember my teammate. #JDF16 #OpeningDay
