UPDATE: Former Blazers Star Brandon Roy Shot in Compton After Shielding Children From Gunfire
Former Portland Trail Blazers all-star and current coach at Nathan Hale High School, Brandon Roy, is back in Washington recovering after he sustained gunshot wounds after a man opened fire.
New details have since emerged stating Roy was reportedly shot in what is believed to be a gang-related shooting. According to USA TODAY Sports’ Sam Amick, the gunman “opened fire randomly outside [Roy’s] grandmother’s house” and Roy was wounded while shielding some kids near the scene.
While Roy is yet to comment on the situation, Portland Trail Blazers team officials have released the following statement:
“Like many others, we’re just learning of the injury suffered by former Trail Blazers player Brandon Roy in a shooting over the weekend in California. According to those reports, Brandon was wounded as a bystander, but is expected to recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon and his family during this time.”
Roy had his NBA career cut short due to reoccuring injuries and is currently the head coach at Nathan Hale HS, where he has already delivered a state title in his first season.
