Eugenie Bouchard Gives Maria Sharapova Nasty Death Stare During Post-Match Handshake (Video)
Tennis superstar Maria Sharapova recently returned to the WTA Tour after serving a 15-month ban for violating the organization’s anti-doping policy.
A lot of Sharapova’s fellow players aren’t very happy about her return, including Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard, who’s a hardliner when it comes to PEDs.
“She is a cheater and so to me, I don’t think a cheater in any sport should be allowed to play that sport again,” Bouchard told Turkish broadcaster TRT World at the Istanbul Cup a few weeks back. “It’s so unfair to all the other players who do it the right way and are true. I think from the WTA it sends the wrong message to young kids: ‘Cheat and we will welcome you back with open arms.’ I don’t think that’s right and definitely she is not someone I can say I look up to anymore.”
Seeing as how Bouchard was by far Sharapova’s sharpest critic, it’s only fitting that the two met on Monday in the second round of the Madrid Open. Bouchard got the better of Sharapova, too, beating the former world no. 1 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. However, the hostility didn’t end with the final point. Bouchard looked downright contemptuous during the post-match handshake, shooting Sharapova a nasty death stare.
