Thousands Injured in Stampede at Juventus Champions League Final Viewing Party in Turin (Video)
Mass hysteria erupted in Turin on Saturday when a stampede broke out at a Champions League Final viewing party in the city’s Piazza San Carlo.
Thousands of Juventus fans had gathered to watch their team battle Real Madrid for the European title. They were watching the game peacefully until someone detonated a firecracker around the 80th minute. The loud bang sparked fears of a bomb, sending waves of panic through the crowd.
The exact moment the stampede broke out was caught on video. It is absolutely chilling:
Police estimate at least 1,500 people were injured, either from being crushed into barriers or trampled under foot. At least seven people were seriously injured. Three of them are reportedly in critical condition, including a seven-year-old boy with injuries to his head and chest.
Much anger has been directed at local authorities, whom critics say did not take adequate crowd control measures. However, these days any gathering of people is going to get spooked by the sound of a blast, and preventing people from smuggling firecrackers into the square would have been impossible.
Below are some photos of the stampede’s aftermath.
