Brett Favre Admits He Didn’t Know What a ‘Nickel Defense’ Was (Video)
Brett Favre may have methodically picked apart defenses in his prime, but heading into the NFL, he was actually more clueless than most teenage Madden players when it came to defensive packages.
In fact, he was so deep over his head that he had to ask his backup, Ty Detmer, what the hell a nickel defense was. (It’s a setup with a “nickel” or fifth defensive back, btw.)
Here he is owning up to it, all while kinda looking like he’s 90% done with his transformation into Santa Claus:

When he learned what it was, he wasn’t impressed (transcript via CBS).
Finally, I said, ‘I just gotta know.’ So I said, ‘Ty, I gotta ask you a question.’ And Ty was about as goofy as I was.
“He says, ‘What’s that?’
“I said, ‘What’s a nickel defense?’
“He gets real quiet. He says, ‘Are you serious?’
“Yeah, I’m serious.’
“He says, ‘Well, they basically take out a linebacker and bring in a DB.’
“I said, ‘That’s it?’
“He said, ‘That’s it.’
“I said, ‘Who gives a s–t?'”
Points for honesty, Brett!
