NBA 2K18 to Eventually Release Celtics Version of Kyrie Irving Cover (Tweet)
In June NBA 2K announced that Kyrie Irving would be on the cover of the highly anticipated NBA 2K18 video game.
It was a pretty big deal to see a Cavs player other than LeBron take such an honor, and was further proof that Irving had emerged as a superstar in his own right. So it was kind of ironic that, just one month later, Irving asked the Cavaliers to trade him because he was tired of playing in LeBron’s shadow.
Of course, as you probably know, on Tuesday Irving got his wish. The Cavs traded their superstar point guard to the Boston Celtics. The initial response from the folks at NBA 2K was pretty hilarious:

Here’s the official statement from 2K vice president of basketball operations Jason Argent:
“We are excited to be part of one of the most memorable NBA offseasons in history with Kyrie, our 2K18 cover athlete, and Isaiah, one of the stars of our 2K roster, trading places. This isn’t an unprecedented event, a cover athlete being traded – but it’s certainly interesting timing with 2K18 being released in less than a month. The good news is that as the most authentic and realistic basketball game on the market, we’re used to being nimble and responding to changes in the NBA. Fans should be thrilled to know that we will issue a version of 2K18 featuring Kyrie in a Boston Celtics uniform at a later date.”
At this point we’re not sure when that “later date” will be. But we do know the NBA 2K18 with Irving in a Cavs jersey will hit stores September 19.
