Sometimes baseball brawls are mere formalities. A pitcher hits your star player, so you feel obligated to run out onto the field and push some dudes around. But you’re heart really is not that into it.

This was not the case with the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees on Thursday. These two teams spent pretty much the entire game brawling, and things got downright nasty. The Tigers were even fighting amongst themselves at one point because Justin Verlander felt Victor Martinez was being too nice to Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez after he threw haymakers at Nicholas Castellanos.

Take a look:

After the game, people on both sides were pointing fingers, trying to lay blame at everybody else’s feet. Yankees manager Joe Girardi blamed the umpires for letting things get out of hand. Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera blamed Yankees catcher Austin Romine.

Justin Verlander? Well, apparently he had cooled off a bit after he nearly came to blows with his own teammate. Because he was the only person who seemed to recognize the absurdity of the whole thing:

At time of writing it is unclear whether anybody on either team killed anybody with a trident.
