Michael Phelps Challenges Conor McGregor to a Race, Since He’s Apparently So Found of Competing in Sports He’s No Good At (Tweet)

Last month Michael Phelps lost a race to a digital great white shark in a highly ridiculed stunt promoting the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. Now, apparently tired of losing, he’s taking a page out of the Floyd Mayweather playbook and challenging somebody who doesn’t even play the same sport.

The seed of this idea was planted on Saturday. Like a lot of other athletes, Phelps watched the much-hyped fight between Mayweather and UFC superstar Conor McGregor. Immediately afterward he expressed his admiration of Mayweather’s historic achievement:

However, after thinking about it for a few more days, Phelps came up with a pretty great idea. Since Conor McGregor obviously has no problem competing outside his actual sport, why not challenge him to a race.

Obviously, this is just a joke. But Mayweather-McGregor started out as a joke, too, and look how that turned out.

Of course, I don’t think Phelps can guarantee McGregor the kind of money Mayweather could. At best he might be able to get him free subs for life at Subway.

Still, I’d love to see this happen, assuming McGregor knows how to swim. Stay tuned!
