Maria Sharapova Says Serena’s Thick Thighs & Legs Intimidated Her

What was once ecoected to be a great rivalry never really materialized, as Serena Williams completely dominated Maria Sharapova throughout their careers to the tune of a 19-2 overall record against her—including winning 18 straight matches. It might be shocking, but Sharapova actually beat Williams twice in one year, back in 2004, including an upset in the Wimbledon finals.

After that year, she never tasted victory over Serena again.

Sharapova may have just reignited that one-sided rivalry after she released her memoir that spoke on the battle between the two. Things got a little weird, however, when she stated she was intimidated by Serena because of her thick thighs and legs.

“I think Serena hated me for being the skinny kid who beat her, against all odds, at Wimbledon,” Sharapova wrote in “Unstoppable: MY Life So Far,” which is scheduled to be released next week.

“I think she hated me for taking something that she believed belonged to her. I think she hated me for seeing her at her lowest moment. But mostly, I think she hated me for hearing her cry. She’s never forgiven me for it.”

“First of all her physical presence is much stronger and bigger than you realize watching TV,” wrote Sharapova. “She has thick arms and thick legs and is so intimidating and strong. It’s the whole thing – her presence, her confidence, her personality.”

She also added: “Even now, she can make me feel like a little girl.”

The last time Williams and Sharapova faced each other was the Australian Open quarterfinals in January 2016, and after Sharpova lost yet again, she tested positive for the drug Meldonium that was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Her original suspension of 2 years was reduced to 15 months.
