A high school hockey player from New Jersey scored free season tickets from the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. And it was so easy that, right now, at this very moment, every other Devils fan is wishing they thought of it first.

It all started with a simple tweet. Nick Donnelly, a junior at Marlboro High School in Marlboro Township, simply asked the Devils how many retweets he’d need to get free season tickets.

Donnelly probably didn’t think it would go anywhere. However, a few hours later the Devils tweeted back with an offer they came up with based on some important numbers in team history. And the final total was pretty low.

Needless to say, Donnelly was stunned, because 9,450 retweets was extremely doable.

Sure enough, just two hours later Donnelly had surpassed the threshold for the five-game “Patty Pack.”

By 9:15 p.m. ET, just five hours after making their offer, Donnelly had the retweets he needed for season tickets.

According to the New Jersey Devils website, season ticket packages range from $1,238 in the top corner to $15,500 right up against the glass.

I’m thinking Nick will probably find himself sitting up in the 200-level corner this season. But I’m sure he wont’ be complaining.

As for the Devils, while some may wonder if the social media department is run by idiots, I think they probably knew exactly what they were doing. $1,238 isn’t a bad price for all the good publicity they’ll get out of this.
