Cyclist Crashes Into Pavement at 36 MPH After Handle Bars Suddenly Break Off (Video)
Don’t you just hate it when you’re biking along at 36 mph and your handlebars just break off, and you smash your crotch on the frame, then you crash headfirst into the pavement and slide along for 20 feet before finally coming to a stop in some overgrown grass on the side of the road? I sure do. And I bet French cyclist Maxime Roger is right there with me, because this exact scenario happened to him over the weekend.
Roger was in the middle of a time trial at the Tour de Moselle in northeastern France on Saturday, running in second place, when he went over a slight bump and his carbon fiber handlebars just broke right off. At full speed it’s difficult to see exactly what happens. However, in slow motion you see that, when Roger realizes he is screwed, be places his right foot down to brace for impact. Then his crotch smashes into the stem where the handlebars used to be, causing his front tire to explode right before he hits the road.

Fortunately Roger somehow managed to escape serious injury. In fact, according to DirectVelo, he hopes to be back on his bike by the end of the month—though one imagines he’ll probably want to have a word with his bike manufacturer first.
