Jake Elliott‘s epic field goal is the gift that keeps on giving.

On Sunday, the Eagles’ rookie gave his team a walk-off win over the visiting New York Giants by kicking a 61-yard field goal as the clock expired in the fourth quarter. That in itself was awesome enough. But then we learned that Elliott’s parents had made the trip from Illinois to see the Eagles’ home opener, and somebody caught their reaction to the kick on camera. Then, after that, we learned that Eagles QB Carson Wentz was mic’d up for the kick, and that he had promised to give Elliott his game check if he made it.

The story just kept getting better and better. Now it’s been given the happiest possible ending.

Apparently Wentz texted the video of the game check quote to Elliott and offered to make good on the promise. However, on Wednesday Elliott told reporters that he had refused the offer, which was worth an estimated $31,764. Instead, the two decided that Wentz will donate the money to a charity of Elliott’s choosing.

Now Elliott and Wentz are both heroes…for now. Eagles fans will not hesitate to boo either of them off the field next week if they play poorly. After all, these are the same people who once pelted Santa Clause with snowballs.
