Justin Timberlake Reportedly “Finalizing” Deal to Perform Super Bowl 52 Halftime Show
Multiple Hollywood media outlets are reporting that Justin Timberlake may headline the halftime show at Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis on February 4.
If Timberlake does get the nod, the performance would be JT’s shot at Super Bowl redemption. During the halftime show at Super Bowl 38 nearly 14 years ago, Timberlake ripped off a piece of Janet Jackson‘s shirt to reveal her nipple to millions of shocked viewers, a moment of infamy that spawned the term “wardrobe malfunction.”
According to Variety, the NFL is still bitter about nipplegate, which is the main reason the deal has not yet been finalized. However, that would be a pretty silly reason not to hire Timberlake. It’s not like he would do something like that again. In fact, if anything, the whole “redemption” angle would only increase ratings.
Last week it was reported that the NFL had asked Jay-Z to headline the Super Bowl 52 halftime show. However, he told them no, probably because they asked him to promise not to make any political statements.
Timberlake is not known for being political, and thus constitutes a safer choice for a league desperate not to piss people off. He also has an album coming out in early 2018, which is perfect timing.
Another advantage of a Justin Timberlake halftime show would be the hype surrounding potential pop superstar reunions. The internet would probably go nuts begging JT to get back together with the boys from NSYNC, and at least one website is reporting that former flame Britney Spears “would love to join him on stage.”
