When Justin Verlander lost the 2006 World Series in just his second year in the big leagues, he probably figured he’d come back and win it one day. However, he probably did not figure it would take 11 years, or that it would take a life-changing trade to make it happen, or that he’d get to kiss one of the sexiest women alive when it was all over.

Life doesn’t always work out the way you plan.

Verlander made six All-Star appearances, won four K titles, a Cy Young, and an MVP award in 12 and a half seasons with the Detroit Tigers. During that time the Tigers reached the World Series two times, losing 1-4 to St. Louis in 2006 and 0-4 to San Francisco in 2012.

Unfortunately, the Tigers’ window of contention slammed shut in 2014. And toward the end of the 2017 season, Verlander was given a choice: stick with the Tigers, the only team he’s ever played for, and continue to lose. Or accept a trade to a contender.

In the end, Verlander went with option B. When the Tigers approached him at the end of August with a potential post-deadline trade to the Houston Astros, Verlander spoke to owner Jim Crane and ace starter Dallas Keuchel, then decided to bite the bullet.

The decision changed his life. On Wednesday night, Justin Verlander, one of the best pitchers of his generation, the 2017 ALCS MVP, became a World Series champion.

Watching Verlander celebrate had to be bitter-sweet for the Tigers. But you’d never know it judging from their congratulatory tweet, which was pure class:

Tigers fans? They felt pretty much the same way:

Hang in there, Detroit. We feel your pain.
