Italy Failed to Qualify for the World Cup, and the Whole Country Is FREAKING OUT (TWEETS + PICS)
For the first time since 1958 and just the second time ever, Italy, one of the true giants of international soccer, has failed to qualify for the World Cup.
Having finished second in their qualifying group, Italy had to defeat Sweden in a home-and-home series to reach the World Cup. After losing the first leg 1-0 in Stockholm, the Azzurri needed to beat the Swedes by at least two goals on Monday night in Milan. When the final whistle blew with the score tied 0-0, Italy’s fate was sealed.
Needless to say, the entire country is now freaking the f— out. Italy is one of just three countries who have won the World Cup four times. Not even getting to play in the tournament is practically a national tragedy.
Don’t believe it? Just look at the headlines:

The End. Everyone Out. National Shame. Blue Apocalypse. Those are just a few of the headlines translated in English.
And you thought the reaction to the USA missing the World Cup was severe. At least American players can walk down the street and know they’ll be left alone. Italian players won’t be able to set foot in public for months.
Needless to say, they were absolutely devastated after the game:
Things were pretty emotional on Twitter as well:
I’ll always go with the underdog but a World Cup without Italy is like bingo without my Gran…#soulless

It appears Gianluigi Buffon has played his final game for Italy. He will be much missed. A mountain of a man. A Giant of a goalkeeper. A credit to his sport.

Buffon choking up again. Says he doesn’t want to cry in front of the kids watching at home on TV who dream of playing for Italy. Apologises. Hero

Someone said a World Cup without Italy is like bolognese without parmesan. But a World Cup with Sweden is like a very tasty vongole, you don’t need parmesan! #ITASWE
