The Pittsburgh Pirates indicated their intention to embark on a full rebuild on Monday, trading franchise player Andrew McCutchen to the San Francisco Giants for reliever Kyle Crick, switch-hitting outfield prospect Bryan Reynolds, and $500,000 in international bonus pool money.

McCutchen finished in the top five in MVP voting from 2012 through 2015, winning the award in 2013 with 8.1 wins above replacement. He had a down year in 2016 and got off to a slow start in 2017. However, he returned to form after the first two months, hitting .312/.400/.540 with 22 home runs from May 26 onward.

Of course, its not the gaudy stats or individual awards for which McCutchen will be remembered in Pittsburgh. There, he will always be revered as the man who got the Pirates back to the postseason after one of the longest playoff droughts in the history of professional sports.

McCutchen will always remember Pittsburgh, too. After the trade was announced on Monday, he took full advantage of Twitter’s expanded character limit to bid a touching farewell to the only fans he’s ever played for:

Class stuff.
