Capitals Fans TAKE OVER Streets Of Downtown Washington D.C. After Team Reaches Stanley Cup Finals (Videos)
The Washington Capitals haven’t actually won anything yet. But you’d think they had judging from the way fans poured into the downtown streets following the team’s Eastern Conference Finals Game 7 win on Wednesday night.
It’s certainly hard to blame Caps fans for getting excited. The team has brought them almost nothing but heartache since it was founded back in 1974, and the Alex Ovechkin era has been particularly excruciating.
Ovie arrived in the NHL back in 2005. Since then he’s scored 607 goals, and the Capitals have made the playoffs 10 times. They’ve reached the 100-point plateau seven times, and they’ve won the President’s Trophy as the top team in the regular season three times. However, until this year, they’d never even made it past the second round of the playoffs.
The last two years were probably the most painful for fans. Despite leading the NHL in points during the regular season both times, the Caps lost to arch nemesis Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round. Then they had to watch the Penguins go on to win back-to-back Stanley Cups.
This year, after falling behind 0-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round, it looked like the Capitals were in for yet another early round defeat. But the team battled back. After winning four straight to beat the Blue Jackets in six games, the Capitals beat Sidney Crosby and the Penguins in six games. Then, finally, after falling behind three games to two to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Caps stormed back to win Games 6 and 7 by the combined score of 7-0.
After all they’ve been through over the years, Capitals fans were a powder keg ready to explode. And when the last few seconds ticked off the clock in Game 7, explode is exactly what they did.

That’s a pretty incredible sight to behold. If the Capitals actually go on to win the Stanley Cup in a few weeks, fans are going to shut down DC like Congress trying to abolish Obamacare.
