Johnny Manziel Talks About Trashing Hotel Room & Partying With Gronk During Pre-Draft Visit With Patriots (VIDEO)
Johnny Manziel visited a number of NFL teams prior to the 2014 NFL Draft. One of those teams was the New England Patriots.
It was always unlikely the Patriots would even get the opportunity to draft Manziel. Their first pick in 2014 was no. 29. While Johnny Football fell all the way to the Cleveland Browns at no. 22, he was initially viewed by some as a top 10 pick.
However, judging from the story Manziel told this week about his visit to New England, it doesn’t sound like the Patriots would have picked Manziel even if they did get the chance.
In the first episode of his new Comeback SZN podcast with Barstool Sports, Manziel talked very candidly about his pre-draft visit with the New England Patriots, and the story he told doesn’t sound like something Bill Belichick would find amusing.
The day he got to Boston, Manziel said he planned to have a chill evening in his hotel room. So he went out and got hiself some food and a bottle of wine. However, he did not have a corkscrew, and his attempt to MacGyver the thing open was a disaster.
“The second I did that it sprayed like a bottle of champagne all OVER the room—the walls, the white bed,” Manziel says. “I remember calling [agent Erik Burkhardt] and being like, ‘you think the Patriots are going to get the report of what standing this room is in after I check out?'”
Not long after the wine disaster, Manziel says he got a Facetime from none other than Rob Gronkowski, who had seen on Twitter that he was in town and wanted to party.
“After that failed attempt to try and be on the good side of my visits, I get a FaceTime from Gronk,” Manziel recalled. “As I answer he’s like, ‘You’re here for your visit, I just saw on Twitter. I’m outside your hotel. I just got out of practice, you want to hang out?’ That escalated probably a little bit more than just having a bottle of wine in the hotel room. For as big as he is, that guy can actually play some ping-pong, I was surprised…and maybe drink a couple beers.”

As you probably know, the Patriots eventually drafted Jimmy Garoppolo with the 62nd overall pick in 2014. He’s now making $30 million dollars with the San Francisco 49ers, while Manziel is the backup quarterback for the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
