REPORT: Celtics Made Trade Offer To Spurs For Kawhi Leonard At Deadline
The saga between the San Antonio Spurs and Kawhi Leonard could’ve been over and done with four months ago if the organization had pulled the trigger and parted ways with their disgruntled superstar.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Boston Celtics contacted the Spurs and proposed a trade to them to acquire Kawhi Leonard, but it was turned down.
“The Boston Celtics made a trade offer to San Antonio before the February deadline, but the Spurs turned it down — and never made a counter-proposal, league sources said. San Antonio wasn’t willing to discuss deals for Leonard in February. So far this spring, the Spurs remain resistant to trades.”
Since that time, young players like Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum have become more proven NBA players while still on rookie contracts. The Spurs are currently in the reconciliation phase right now with Kawhi, and if it doesn’t work in their favor, they could end up having to call the Celtics back.
As of right now, Boston has the most appealing assets: starry young players and Sacramento’s No. 1-protected 2019 first-round pick.
