REPORT: Cavaliers Have Made Calls To Spurs About Kawhi Leonard
Right now, it’s still too early in the process to know what the San Antonio Spurs are going to do with Kawhi Leonard after the disgruntled star formally requested that the franchise trade him to another team last week.
There are rumors that Kawhi wants to head to Los Angeles and play for the Lakers, but that is unlikely to happen since head coach Gregg Popovich has a personal rule to never trade a star to a team in his own conference.
One other team dealing with the uncertainty of their star player is Cleveland, and it would take something drastic to ensure LeBron James comes back to the team. According to Cleveland.com writer Terry Pluto, the Cavs have made it known that they are interested in Leonard, and that is one move the King would surely get behind.
What isn’t clear is if the call was to entice LeBron to stay longer, or to see if Kawhi would come and sign a long-term deal to replace Bron if he does bolt in free agency again.
Cleveland does have the No. 8 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, but that won’t nearly be enough to grab a player of Kawhi’s talent level.
