It is not hard to spark outrage on the internet. Just ask the folks at Getty Images. They learned that lesson the hard way on Monday after they published a gallery of images titled “World Cup 2018: The Sexiest Fans,” which came complete with the cheesy tag line, “Talk about a knock-out round.”

The backlash over this gallery stems not so much from the content, which was pretty mild, but from the source of the content. You see, people expect a gallery of sexy sports fans from a sports blog such as the one you’re currently reading. People do not expect it from Getty Images, one of the world’s most respected sources of serious photojournalism.

It’s kind of like wearing flip-flops. It’s totally acceptable at the pool, or at your local Applebees. It’s definitely not acceptable at work, or at your cousin’s wedding.

Fortunately, the folks at Getty Images eventually came to their senses and deleted the gallery. They also issued the following apology:

Earlier, we published a piece, “World Cup 2018: The Sexiest Fans,” that did not meet our editorial standards. We regret the error and have removed the piece. There are many interesting stories to tell about the World Cup and we acknowledge this was not one of them.

Of course, while Getty may have deleted the gallery, all the photos of sexy World Cup fans are still available for licencing…
