Charles Barkley: Bill Russell Flipping Me Off ‘Was One Of The Coolest Things Ever’
This week, the NBA finally held their award ceremony that would reward everyone from the 6th man of the year to the Most Valuable Player in the entire league.
The award ceremony was nice, but everything took a back seat to Bill Russell on this night. The 11-time NBA Champion was getting praised by Charles Barkley on stage when the camera panned to the Boston Celtics legend sitting down, but then he inexplicably shot Sir Charles the middle finger while smiling.
It was an awesome moment that was loved by all, including the recipient of that finger. Barkley addressed the middle finger incident while appearing on “The Jim Rome Podcast” on Tuesday, and he enjoyed the moment thoroughly.
“I thought it was one of the coolest things ever to happen to me,” Barkley said. “Because Bill’s a mentor, he’s like a father to me, and he does stuff to everybody. It meant a lot to me because, if you know Bill – well, I don’t even call him Bill, Mr. Russell – he is one of the best people ever.
“I was laughing so hard. I almost couldn’t keep reading … I almost fell, I was laughing so hard inside. I didn’t want to stop and interrupt (Oscar) Robinson getting his Lifetime Achievement Award. I thought it was really funny.”
Russell later took to Twitter and apologized for his actions.
