REPORT: Spurs Have ‘Significant Interest’ in Acquiring Kristaps Porzingis

With Kristaps Porzingis heading toward restricted free agency this summer, the New York Knicks may have to fight off multiple teams that would love to lure him away from the Big Apple and make him a vocal point of their franchise.

The San Antonio Spurs are one team believed to have “significant interest” in Kritaps Porzingis, according to The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor.

They’ll be a significant problem with getting that done due to the fact New York has the right to match any offer sheet. The max that any outside team could sign Porzingis to is four years, $122.1 million, but for the Spurs, they already have $110.9 million in salary committed to just 12 players for 2019-20. Creating enough space below the cap to sign Porzingis would likely decimate the current talent on the roster to get below the cap.

Porzingis, who is still recovering from a torn ACL, has yet to make his season debut during the 2018-2019 season.

When healthy, the 7-foot-3 star is averaging 17.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and two blocks per game through his first three campaigns.
