Once-Homeless HS Football Player Jamal Speaks Charged With Murdering Girlfriend
Back in September 2018, there was a story out of the D.C. area about a teen named Jamal Speaks who was deemed ineligible to play football because he didn’t have a permanent address. His struggles with homelessness put his dreams of getting a scholarship to go to college in jeopardy.
At the time, Speaks was being recruited by Temple University. Those dreams are now over and a drastic turn of events has him currently behind bars and staring in the face of a lifetime behind bars.
Police say the 19-year-old shot and killed his 18-year-old girlfriend inside a Fort Washington home in April, according to Fox 5.
“Authorities say responding officers and detectives were initially told by witnesses at the scene that Floyd had accidentally shot herself. An autopsy later revealed that Floyd’s wound “could not have been self-inflicted.” A medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.
An investigation revealed Floyd’s boyfriend, Jamal Speaks, of Palmer Park, had illegally purchased the firearm used in connection to Floyd’s death and “had been playing with the gun throughout the day.” Authorities say Speaks fired the weapon one time on the night of April 7, striking Floyd.
Speaks then, according to authorities, placed the weapon in Floyd’s hand to “make it appear as if she had shot herself.”
Speaks later admitted his involvement in the shooting, authorities say.”
Along with being charged with first-degree murder and second-degree murder, Speaks is also facing assault and weapons charges.
