Earlier this month, Barstool’s head honcho Dave Portnoy took to Twitter to celebrate winning an auction to watch a “Monday Night Football” game with Roger Goodell in his basement man cave that we all saw during the NFL Draft.
He always thought the league would find someone to back out of it, and on Friday, that’s exactly what happened. The Sports Business Journal reported that Portnoy failed “background check” negating his win.
NFL VP/Communications Brian McCarthy told SBJ Portnoy’s multiple encounters with NFL security and his 2015 arrest for trespassing at NFL Headquarters during deflategate contributed to the failed test.
“He was the highest bidder, but the bid was contingent upon a background check,” McCarthy said. “So he consented to the background check, and it came back and he heard from the NFL today that he did not pass the background check. He will not be the winner.”

Subject: NFL Auction Experience – Background Check
We wanted to update you on the background and criminal check that was conducted on you in connection with your bid on NFL Auction Item #3136325. As you are aware, and consented to, you were subject to a background check before being declared the winner of this experiential item.
Based on the background report provided to us, you did not pass the NFL’s background check and therefore we are unable to award you NFL Auction Item #3136325. In particular, the following incidents were identified:
Portnoy posted an angry video to Twitter:
“Two-hundred and fifty grand to charity, I won it fair and square, and they say no. Why? Because they’re afraid of me. They’re afraid of the brain, and they’re not going to have some fun with it. So, f*** you, Roger Goodell. By the way, don’t do charities and let the guy win it who you don’t want to win it. That’s on you.”
If you’re not aware of why this is a big deal, Portnoy and his company have basically been a thorn in the side of Goodell and the NFL starting back in 2015 when they staged a protest outside the NFL’s New York City headquarters to protest the four-game Deflategate suspension for Tom Brady.
Things have only gotten worse as Portnoy created a clown Goodell t-shirt to profit off of as the NFL hit back at them by kicking him out of Super Bowl 53 media day and the game itself, which was a 13-3 Patriots victory over the Rams.
