Steelers Insider Says Ben Roethlisberger Has Two Options: “Restructure or Retire”
Have we seen the last of Ben Roethlisberger in the NFL? If he doesn’t restructure his contract, that could very well be the case, according to Pittsburgh Steelers insider Brooke Pryor.
While speaking on ESPN’s Sportscenter, Pryor flat-out suggested that Big Ben only has two options for the 2021 season: restructure or retire.
Here’s the clip:
“His options essentially boil down to two “r’s,” restructure or retire. The Steelers can save around $14 million if they can restructure his base salary and roster bonus into a signing bonus, spread over multiple years.
“Roethlisberger has signaled that he’s willing to take a pay cut, but retirement could still be on the table – especially considering longtime teammate and friend Maurkice Pouncey called it a career.”
Roethlisberger is coming off a year in which he led the Steelers to a 12-4 record and the AFC North title. He threw for 3,803 yards and 33 touchdowns with only 10 interceptions, but his play trailed off noticeably down the stretch, causing many to wonder if it was time for him to hang ’em up.
Big Ben and the Steelers are expected to have that discussion next week, with a decision to be made before the new league-year opens on March 17.
