Last month, Cole Beasley went on a super tirade about the COVID-19 vaccine and the NFL’s rules restricting unvaccinated players. The Buffalo Bills WR would later state he was done speaking on the matter. He did not listen to himself on thta notion.
Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin is trending this week after he took issue with the Dallas Cowboys not being one of the 13 teams to reach the 85% vaccine threshold that would ease COVID-19 restrictions during training camp, which begins this week.
“Yeah, and it should upset them,” Irvin said of the Cowboys recently at the opening of the Dallas chapter of Merging Vets & Players, which brings together combat veterans and former pro athletes. “It should upset them. Dude, you’re not thinking right. You’re not thinking right. Whatever you got, I don’t give a damn. … Nothing else can be more important.
“You’re not going to get this [winning a Super Bowl] easily. Nothing else could be more important. … Jimmy [Johnson] made that abundantly clear [during Irvin’s playing career]. Nothing else is more important. And not being one of the [teams] says there’s other things to a great number of people on this team that are more important than winning championships, and that makes me worried.”
The proverbial leader of the anti-vaxx movement in the NFL, Cole Beasley, took issue with his comments.
“That’s not what that means,” Bills receiver Cole Beasley tweeted in response to PFT’s story regarding Irvin’s remarks. “You can be vaccinated and not do all the right things football wise to be at your best. All it means is players are gonna be out there with covid and we won’t know cause they only get tested once a week so the NFL can make their money.”
A Twitter user replied: “Well you run a much higher risk of testing positive and missing games without the vaccine.”
Beasley responded with, “Well I missed 0 games last year and nobody had the vaccine so the percentages are on my side.”
In another response, he said: “I haven’t passed covid to anyone. Me getting the vaccine is not gonna bring anyone back. I’m not a big star. Me playing football has nothing to do with it. I would feel the same regardless. I’m a part of the solution for Americans having their freedom to do as they choose.”
“Do scientists know everything there is to know about covid?”
“So then trusting in science is irrelevant at this point. Your Acl is something that’s black and white. I trust science with those things as well. It’s easy to see your tendon is torn hey let’s reattach it. These issues are in no way similar.”
“I’m not endangering others if they know i am not vaccinated as well as others and are still willing to take the risk. They are making that choice. I am entitled to live my life freely. Cars are dangerous people still drive.”
Unvaccinated players will not be able to leave the team hotel and must wear masks and remain distanced from people inside the facility, according to protocols. Vaccinated players will not be required to wear masks, can eat meals with other vaccinated players and have no limitations in the weight room.
