It is safe to say that Steph Curry is one of the giants of the NBA—although we don’t mean that quite literally. Since joining the NBA via the 2009 Draft, Curry has been one of the sport’s most dominant players and is renowned for his three-point shooting abilities. However, beig the undersized player he is, there has been a lot of speculation about Steph Curry’s height during his professional career.
We’re here to give you all the answers you’re looking for. The 33-year old from Ohio has so far played his entire NBA career with the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco. Here, he has won three NBA championships (2015, 2017, and 2018) and has twice been named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (2015 and 2016).
With eight NBA All-Stars to his name and the most three-point field goals in NBA history, it is clear that Curry hasn’t let his lack of height stand in his way. Let’s take a look at Stephen Curry’s height statistics and the other numbers that highlight exactly why he is so highly regarded on the court.
How Tall Is Steph Curry?
The 2009 NBA Draft Combine’s player measurements recorded the followed statistics for Steph Curry:
- Height (no shoes) – 6′ 2″
- Height (with shoes) – 6′ 3.25″
- Weight – 181.0
- Wingspan – 6′ 3.5″
- Standing reach – 8′ 1″
- Body fat % – 5.7
A number of scouts made reference to Curry’s height around this time. One noted that “At 6-2, he’s extremely small for the NBA shooting guard position, and it will likely keep him from being much of a defender at the next level.”

Another erroneously noted Steph Curry’s height as being 6′ 1″, which they described as “far too small to play solely at the 2G position.”
At the age of 13, Curry was listed at around 5′ 7″, which would have all but certainly ruled him out of an NBA career. To date, there have only been 25 players to have featured in the NBA with a height of 5′ 9″ or less.
2019 Update
In 2019 the NBA said that it would be “taking actions to make sure there will be no more fibbing on how tall NBA players really are” and would require exact player heights to be provided.
With regards to Steph Curry’s height, the updated measurements recorded no change. He was still 6′ 2″ without shoes and 6′ 3.25″ when wearing shoes. While certain players experience a growth spurt during the early part of their careers, this does not seem to have been the case with Curry.
Curry even made reference to the NBA’s new official height listings around this time: “Without shoes, I’m officially 6-2 and 3-quarters. But I don’t play basketball without shoes.”
How Tall Are His Parents?
Steph Curry comes from good basketballing stock, with his father Wardell “Dell” Curry playing in the NBA between 1986 and 2002. Dell has a listed height of 6′ 5″, making him somewhat taller than his son.
The older curry had a stellar career in the NBA, playing for five teams including Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Carotte Hornets. When he retired, the shooting guard was the all-time leader in both overall points and three-point field goals made for the Hornets.
Curry’s mother is Sonya Curry, who announced her divorce from Dell in August 2021. Her listed height is 5′ 3″, indicating that it was his father’s genes that Curry inherited when it came to height.
Steph does also have a brother, Seth, who competes against him in the NBA. Seth, who is 31 years old, currently plays for the Brooklyn Nets and has a listed height of 6′ 2″, the exact same as his older brother.
How Does Steph Curry’s Height Compare to Others?
During the 2021-2022 NBA season, the average height of a basketball player was 6’6″ tall. This certainly puts Curry on the lower end of the scale when it comes to NBA player height.
Of course, different positions come with different responsibilities and height is not always the most essential factor on the court.
Outside of basketball, Curry would be regarded as anything but short. The average American male stands 5′ 9″, putting Curry in the taller-than-average category as a whole.
Does Curry Let His ‘Lack’ of Height Affect Him?
The short answer here is No. As we have noted in the introduction, Curry is one of the sport’s most successful, decorated, and admired players. Despite what Michael Jordan said in 2019, many believe that Curry will end up in the NBA Hall of Fame.
Curry recently surpassed Ray Allen (a Hall of Famer) to become the NBA’s leading player when it comes to three-point field goals. This made him the first player to score more than 3,000 points from three-point field goals.
Despite his incredible ability to shoot and score from range, he isn’t known for his dunking abilities. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t occasionally dunk, though it’s far from his greatest asset.
In 2021, Curry even made light of his lack of dunking prowess. When one interviewer jokingly encourage Curry to work harder on his dunking ability, Curry responded by saying, “You’re asking too much from me now.”
Given that he will shortly turn 34, it’s likely that we won’t see many more Steph Curry dunks in the future. Still, when you can throw threes like him, is there really any need to even try?
