Mike Tyson has taken plenty of hits in the ring, but this time, he’s swinging at something much bigger than a title belt.
He has a clear message aimed squarely at President Donald Trump. The former heavyweight champion has joined forces with a roster of sports legends and entertainers, calling on Trump to take meaningful action on cannabis reform.
In a letter addressed to the White House, Tyson and several high-profile athletes urged Trump to push for the removal of marijuana from the Schedule I drug list. They didn’t hold back.
“People continue to serve lengthy federal sentences for conduct that is now legal in most states – which makes their continued incarceration not only cruel but absurd,” the letter reads.
It adds that former President Biden’s failure to act on this issue leaves a clear opening for Trump to show leadership.
Growing Push From The Sports World

Tyson’s not alone. NBA star Kevin Durant, NFL veterans Dez Bryant and Antonio Brown, former NBA MVP Allen Iverson, boxing legend Roy Jones Jr., and Heisman winner Ricky Williams have all signed onto the letter. They’re sending a message: the status quo no longer makes sense.

The group is pushing not only for clemency for marijuana-related offenses but also for the reclassification of marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III substance. In a follow-up letter, they argue that reclassification would align federal law with state policies, encourage medical research, and boost economic growth. “Marijuana’s current classification as a Schedule I substance is scientifically outdated, economically detrimental, and at odds with modern medical understanding,” the letter states.
This isn’t new territory for Tyson. He’s long been an open advocate and user of marijuana, even running his own cannabis business. But this effort marks a more formal move into policy, as he leverages his platform to influence one of the biggest names in American politics.
With public sentiment increasingly favoring legalization and dozens of states already changing their laws, Tyson and his co-signers believe now is the time for federal action. Tyson’s move adds a new layer of star-powered pressure to a long-overdue conversation, but whether Trump responds remains unclear.
